Financial Aid Programs Offered.

There are three types of financial aid:

Grant aid is gift aid that does not have to be repaid.

Loan aid is assistance that must be repaid, but normally not while a student remains enrolled at least half-time.

Work aid is financial assistance earned through part-time employment.

If you meet the March 1st priority deadline for submitting the proper application and satisfy the eligibility requirements, you will be considered for the various types of financial assistance available at UNO.

Grants.

  • Federal Pell Grant - federal gift aid, usually considered the foundation of a student's financial aid package, and is the base upon which other awards are built. Annual Pell Grant awards range from $200 to $4,310, depending on your financial need, depending on your Expected Family Contribution and the number of hours you are enrolled. Pell Grant awards are reserved for students who do not already hold a bachelor's degree.

  • Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (AC) - federal gift aid awarded to students in their first or second academic years. Additional requirements:

    1st year (0-24 Credit hours)
    • Full time student
    • US Citizen
    • Federal Pell Grant recipient
    • Completed a rigorous secondary school program after January 1, 2006. (See below)

    2nd year (25-48 Credit hours)
    • Full time student
    • US Citizen
    • Federal Pell Grant recipient
    • Completed a rigorous secondary school program after January 1, 2005. (See below)
    • 3.0 Cumulative GPA

    Rigorous program is defined for the 06-07 & 07-08 Academic years as:
    • Advanced or Honor programs as recognized by the Secretary of Education.
    • State Scholars Initiative. This program, supported by Congress, sets course requirements modeled after the National Commission on Excellence in Education recommendation. Fourteen states participate in this program and eight additional states will begin participating this year. Minimum requirements are four years of English, three years of math (including Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry), three years of lab science (biology, chemistry, physics), three and one-half years of social studies and two years of a language other than English.
    • Course requirements similar to the State Scholars Initiative Program. Requires four years of English, three years of Math (including Algebra I and a higher level course such as Algebra II, Geometry, or Data Analysis and Statistics), three years of science (including at least two courses from biology, chemistry or physics), three years of social studies, and one year of a foreign language.
    • Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and scores. Student who have taken two AP or IB courses and received passing scores on the exams for those courses will be considered eligible.

  • Federal SMART Grant- federal gift aid awarded to students in their third (49 – 72 credit hours) and fourth (73-minimum number of credits required for graduation) academic years. Additional requirements:
    • Full time student
    • US Citizen
    • Federal Pell Grant Recipient
    • Cumulative 3.0 GPA prior to each disbursement
    • Pursuing a major in the following majors as determined by the Secretary of Education and the Director of National Intelligence.
    • Enrolled in at least one class required for your MAJOR.

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant(SEOG) - federal gift aid awarded to undergraduate students with high levels of financial need. SEOG awards range from $200 to $2,700 annually.

  • Nebraska State Grant(NSG) - a combination of federal and state gift aid administered through the state of Nebraska. Annual NSE awards range from $200 to $2,700, and are available to undergraduate students with high levels of need.

  • University Assistance Grant (UAG) - institutional gift assistance awarded to undergraduate students with moderate levels of need. UAG awards range from $200 - $2,000.

  • University Tuition Grant(UTG) - institutional gift assistance awarded to undergraduate students with high levels of need. UTG awards normally range from $200 to $2,700 annually.

  • University Tuition Assistance Grant(UTAG) - institutional gift assistance awarded to undergraduate and graduate students with moderate levels of need. UTAG awards normally range from $200 to $1,000 annually.

  • Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Grant - institutional gift assistance awarded to Pell-eligible, undergraduate, Nebraska resident students who submit their FAFSA by April 1, and complete the aid process no later than June 1. TAP awards range from $200 - $2,700.

Loans.

  • Federal Perkins Loan - low interest federal loan aid, available primarily to undergraduate students enrolled at least 3/4 time and graduate students enrolled at least 1/2 time. Interest accrual and loan repayment begin nine (9) months after you cease to be enrolled at least half-time. Annual awards normally range from $1,000 to $3,000.

  • Federal Stafford Loan - loan aid provided by a lender such as a bank or credit union at interest rates below the market lending rate. A freshman student may be eligible to borrow up to $3,500 annually; a sophomore student up to $4,500; a junior or senior student up to $5,500; a graduate student up to $8,500. Independent students may be eligible for additional loan amounts up to $4,000 for freshman and sophomores, $5,000 for juniors and seniors, and $12,000 for graduate students. Factors such as total family contribution and other financial aid received may limit the amount of loan you can borrow. Loan interest accrual and repayment begin six (6) months after you cease to be enrolled at least half-time.

  • Federal Parent Loan to Undergraduate Students(PLUS) - low interest loan aid provided by a lender such as a bank or credit union. PLUS loans are available to parents of dependent students. Financial need is not a requirement. PLUS borrowers may borrow an amount equal to the student's cost of attendance minus other aid. Borrowers should investigate all other sources of financial aid prior to applying for a PLUS loan. For additional information click here.

  • Federal Graduate PLUS Loan - low interest loan aid provided by a lender such as a bank or credit union. Graduate PLUS loans are available to graduate students enrolled at least half-time. Financial need is not a requirement. Graduate PLUS borrowers may borrow an amount equal to student's cost of attendance minus other aid. Borrowers should investigate all other sources of financial aid, including Federal Stafford loans prior to applying for a Graduate PLUS loan. For additional information click here.

  • Alternative Loans - alternative loans are loans made available by lenders to students who need additional funding to help with their educational costs. For additional information click here.

Work.

  • Federal Work-Study(FW-S) - assistance is federal aid earned through part-time on-campus or off-campus employment. Work opportunities are available at many UNO locations. Students who receive a Federal Work-Study offer in their financial aid package are not guaranteed a work-study job. Students are paid at least a minimum wage and FW-S earnings are paid every two weeks. The office of Student Employment Services, 554-2321 has a complete listing of FW-S opportunities.
