Chapter 1606 - Selective Reserve (for Active Reservists and Guardsmen)

The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. You may use this education assistance program for degree programs, certificate or correspondence courses, cooperative training, independent study programs, apprenticeship/on-the-job training, and vocational flight training programs. Remedial, refresher and deficiency training are available under certain circumstances. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve components. VA makes the payments for this program. You may be entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits. Your benefit entitlement ends 14 years from the date of your eligibility for the program, or on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.
  • Commit to a 6 year obligation after 1 July 1985 in the Selected Reserves or the National Guard
  • Complete your high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Complete your IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training)
  • Be participating satisfactorily in the required training for your unit
Monthly Payments under Chapter 1606 will depend on the amount of hours taken each semester. To further review your benefits under Chapter 1606 click on VA Pamphlet 22-90-3.
To begin the process of applying for Chapter 1606 benefits veterans using their benefits for the FIRST TIME are required to complete the following paperwork and bring the following items to the UNO Veterans Services Office for processing:
  1. pdf VA Form 22-1990 - Application for VA Education Benefits. Click on the form number and print out, then fill in applicable information
  2. Copy of DD Form 214, member copy #4. Lost your DD Form 214 click here
  3. Void check or routing number and account number of your bank if you wish to use direct deposit to receive your monthly stipend
  4. Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE-DD Form 2384-1)
  5. Reserve Kicker paperwork for additional benefits, if applicable
Students transferring the use of their benefits to UNO from another college or university are required to complete the following paperwork and bring to the UNO Veterans Services Office for processing:
